Rebecca Sharp
( Artist )
Rebecca Sharp (b. 1989, Sweden) is the artist behind The Doormat. Sharp’s poetic and conceptual projects consider our place on earth in the context of human geography, politics and the human impulse for rootedness and belonging. Her projects are driven by an interest in the boundary between the private and the public, the representation of the body and its relation to itself and the space around it. The strive is to question the preconceptions we have of the world, as we know it, and the social- and power structures we inevitably construct our lives around and to ask questions about the society we live in and acknowledge the lives we lead as individuals.
Invitation to Contribute
The aim is to celebrate the differences and likeness of the local, national and international and intended to encourage us to transgress the liminal space of our imaginative and intellectual boundaries, in how we perceive The Other.
People are invited to collect grass from their local surroundings, send it to the artist to be woven into and represented within the artwork.
After each sample of grass collected, the work will slowly unfold and continually be woven until grass from every country in the world can be represented within the doormat. *

The completion of the work depends on participation, and the uncertainty if the work will ever be finished reflects the question back at us, will humanity ever reach the point of a union?
